THE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Design & Technology has the central aim of developing the intellectual capacity and practical skills of the students through the process of investigating, designing and making products.

The aim is that students should develop an interest in design, nutrition, enjoy working with equipment and materials and develop confidence, adaptability and pride in all their work.

The Design & Technology Department is very well equipped with facilities for product design, textiles, food & nutrition, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (C.A.D. and C.A.M.).

All students in Years 7-9 are currently working on the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum leading to Key Stage 4 GCSE and Key Stage 5 A level or equivalent.

The department also offers a range of extra-curricular clubs, trips and exciting days including S.T.E.M. activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

Key Stage 3

In Years 7-9 students have the opportunity of working card, wood, metal, plastic, textiles and food.

Students are introduced to a design process and are taught basic skills which they use in a number of projects throughout Key Stage 3. Safety in practical areas is an integral part of the course.

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students have the opportunity to further develop their Design & Technology skills by specialising in one or two subjects from a choice of product design, textiles or food & nutrition.

Key Stage 5

At KS5, students can select either textiles, food & nutrition or product design graphics, which prepare students further for higher education or employment in related vocational areas.
